Bio
Anja Niemi (b. 1976) is a Norwegian visual artist and photographer known for her distinctive photographs that engage with themes that resonate with the human experience. The images assert small nuances within complex stories in which she is both author and character. Concealment is prevalent in Niemi’s practice as a whole, her characters faces are rarely entirely revealed. By removing specific identities, Niemi orchestrates the dismantling of herself as a singular identity and the work becomes a vessel for universal ideas we can all relate to. She invites viewers to explore themes of identity, conformity and our connection to the natural world, gaining recognition for their cinematic quality and narrative depth. Educated at London College of Printing and Parsons School of Design in New York, Niemi’s work has been exhibited globally in museums, galleries and art fairs such as Photo London, Photo Basil, Photo Fairs Shanghai and AIPAD. Museum exhibitions include Fotografiska, MAAT, Musee Des Arts Decoratifs and Des Moines Art Center. Five monographs have been published and her work is represented in many prominent corporate and private collections.
